FREE Baby Hat Pattern

finished two of the basic baby hats already

Img_1821

These are so quick to knit and very rewarding.  I am going to send these to the
Jackson Recovery Center's Women and Children's Center.  Many of the women going through treatment are pregnant.  They're trying to straighten out their lives.  I think it's only fair to give those babies and children a little extra chance to get started out on the right foot.  Some lucky baby will have a comfy little hat to cover his or her head.
Here's the FREE PATTERN -

Making frame buttons

Button art on the cheap.

I love kitschy little home decor items/wall hangings, because a little color goes a long way to spice up a room. ESPECIALLY when you live in an apartment (hello Mod Podge Command Central) and you can't paint the walls. I have a love affair with buttons; I would marry them if I could. I decided to spice up a boring wall in my room with this cute little piece, incorporating my very favorite buttons and, of course, Mod Podge. Here's how to make it.

You probably have a handprint of your little
one recorded in plaster somewhere but it’s not
exactly something that you can carry with you.
With this fingerprint pendant, you can create a
precious keepsake as well as a one-of-a-kind
piece of jewelry!

 Tutorial: grass bouquet

Tools

  • Scissors
  • Pencil

Materials

  • Bag of dirt (20 kg)
  • Seed packet of fast-growing grass, like rye or fescue (available at garden stores)

Tutorial: Twisted Prime Socks

Twisted Prime Socks were created in response to a challenge in a Ravelry group to knit something using prime numbers.  Such numbers cans be found in abundance in this pattern.  I recommend it for more experienced sock knitters because this is my first written pattern.  You will notice as you follow it that I'm not found of abbreviations, and simply write out what you are to do.
This pattern uses about 5 ounces of fingering weight sock wool (they weighed 4.35 ounces finished but it's good to have a bit extra). I used a two ply, handspun wool and silk blend and size 0 double pointed needle. You will want to go up one if you are a tight knitter as I am not.
Cast on 65 stitches (13 repeats of 5).

Tutorial: Strawberry or Raspberry Crochet Hat Pattern

This pattern is for size 0 - 3+ months. You can adjust the pattern for the size of your choice using the head size chart at the end of this post. Just change the number of stitches and rows until it reaches the number of inches specified in the chart.

Size I/5.5 hook, size G/6.0
Red or pink worsted weight yarn for berry
Green worsted weight yarn for stem
Yellow or white worsted weight yarn for strawberry seeds

Pillow: Crazy for Zig Zags

Zig Zag Pillow from Make it Do
I created this zig zag pillow tutorial for a guest post on Ucreate a while back, but I wanted to share it here as well.
Not long ago, I was strolling through Anthropologie online and noticed a wonderful zig zag pillow that really got my wheels turning.  The zig zags were so fresh: geometric and yet meandering.  I knew I could make something similar that would be a great fit to my home… and much cheaper than the $68 Anthropologie price tag.  My version of their pillow is softer and less modern… and I love how it turned out.  I especially love the technique I figured out for making the zig zags.  It would be easy to adapt this tutorial to embellish a skirt, dish towel, or table runner.

Introduction

My sister-in-law (who incidentally lives in Michigan, the nation's high-five) asked me for a no-frills mitten pattern using worsted weight yarn.  Finding one was harder than I thought, so I came up with this one.  It is quite simple, worked in single crochet only. I have included a pattern for an optional star appliqué, but feel free to experiment with other embellishments, such as crocheted flowers or beading.  Or not.  Sometimes less is more.

On Friday, amongst the various Bits-of-my-day, I showed you the above picture. It was just a quick snapshot of my crochet at the time when I took it out of my bag, and to be honest I didn't give the picture an awful lot of thought. It was only when you began commenting on this colourful "flower" of mine that I realised how ambiguous photographs can be sometimes.
Some of you even asked for my Flower Pattern, and awwww I feel kind of bad about this.......but you see....it isn't in fact a flower at all.
Although it certainly does look very flower-like when it's all rolled up like that.

Video : How To Make a Slip Knot for Crochet

This is my very first video tutorial so I thought I would start out with something simple. Just about every crochet book shows you how to do a slip knot to get started but honestly, when I look at the drawings I think they look really confusing. Hopefully this little video will make it a lot easier for crochet beginners to get started.

Raffia Christmas Tree Ornament

Raffia Christmas Tree Ornament

Raffia is a fiber from the giant leaves of a palm tree found in Madagascar. The raffia used in these ornaments is Rayon.  It is available through Nashville Wraps. Raffia Ribbon, in shiny pearlized colors on 100 yard rolls, is made from convenient rayon for elegant gift packaging. So you can crochet with the raffia and also use left overs for packages.
Consider crocheting these designs in natural raffia for a more eco-friendly version.
