Plum Pudding

Christmas pudding

Plum Pudding

Materials

  • 4 mm crochet hook
  • Double knitting yarn in purple and white
  • One length each of green and red yarn for holly and berry embellishment
  • Fiberfil
  • Twilley’s ‘Goldfingering’ for hanging loop. (This is a widely available 3 ply gold coloured thread);

Stitch Guide

Decrease: insert hook into next stitch. Yarn over and pull loop through stitch (2 loops on hook). Insert hook into next stitch. Yarn over and pull loop through stitch (3 loops on hook). Yarn over and draw through all 3 loops on hook.

The Pudding

Foundation chain (start at base of pudding)
With purple yarn chain 2.
Round 1
8 double–crochet in 2nd chain from hook.
Join with a slip–stitch to first double–crochet. (8 stitches)
Round 2
Chain 1. 2 double–crochet in each stitch around.
Join with a slip–stitch to first double–crochet. (16 stitches)
Round 3
Chain 1. (1 double–crochet in next stitch. 2 double–crochet in next stitch) 8 times.
Join with a slip–stitch to first double–crochet. (24 stitches)
Rounds 4–5
Chain 1. 1 double–crochet in each stitch around.
Join with a slip–stitch to first double–crochet.
Round 6
Chain 1. (1 double–crochet in each of next 3 stitches. 2 double–crochet in next stitch) 6 times.
Join with a slip-stitch to first double-crochet. (30 stitches)
Rounds 7–8
Chain 1. 1 double–crochet in each stitch around.
Join with a slip–stitch to first double–crochet.
Round 9
Chain 1. (1 double–crochet in each of next 3 stitches. 1 decrease) 6 times.
Join with a slip–stitch to first double–crochet. (24 stitches)
Rounds 10–11
Chain 1. 1 double–crochet in each stitch around.
Join with a slip–stitch to first double–crochet.
Round 12
Chain 1. (1 double–crochet in next stitch. 1 decrease) 8 times.
Join with a slip–stitch to first double–crochet. (16 stitches)
Round 13
Chain 1. (1 decrease) 8 times.
Join with a slip–stitch to first decrease.
Fill with fibrefil. (8 stitches)
Round 14
Chain 1. (1 decrease) 4 times.
Join with a slip–stitch to first decrease. (4 stitches) Cut yarn, weave tail through last four stitches, and fasten off.

The Sauce

Foundation chain
With white chain 2.
Round 1
8 double–crochet in 2nd chain from hook.
Join with a slip–stitch to first double–crochet. (8 stitches)
Round 2
Chain 1. 2 double–crochet in each stitch around.
Join with a slip–stitch to first double–crochet. (16 stitches)
Round 3
Chain 1. (1 double–crochet in next stitch. 2 double–crochet in next stitch) 8 times.
with a slip–stitch to first double–crochet. (24 stitches)
(Note: ‘Drips’ of sauce are made by making a short length of chain and then working double–crochets into these chains.)
Round 4
Chain 1. 1 double–crochet in each of next 3 stitches.
*Chain 4. 1 double–crochet in 2nd chain from hook.
1 double–crochet in each of next 2 chains.
1 double–crochet in each of next 6 stitches.
Chain 3. 1 double–crochet in 2nd chain from hook.
1 double–crochet in next chain.*
1 double–crochet in each of next 6 stitches.
Repeat from * to * once.
1 double–crochet in each of next 3 stitches.
Join with a slip–stitch to first double–crochet. (34 double–crochet)
Round 5
(Note: in this round the back loops of the chains made in the previous round are worked into.)
Chain 1. 1 double–crochet in each of next 2 stitches.
*Skip next back loop. 1 double–crochet in next back loop.
3 double–crochet in next back loop.
1 double–crochet in each of next 3 stitches.
Skip next double–crochet. 1 double–crochet in each of next 5 stitches.

2 double–crochet in next stitch.
1 double–crochet in each of next 2 stitches.
Skip next stitch. 1 double–crochet in each of next 4 stitches.
Skip next stitch. 1 double–crochet in each of next 2 stitches.
2 double–crochet in next stitch.
1 double–crochet in next stitch.
Skip next stitch. 1 double–crochet in each of next 4 stitches.*
Repeat from * to * once.
Join with a slip–stitch to first double–crochet.
Cut yarn leaving an 18″ tail and pull through last stitch. (This tail will be used for sewing the sauce to the pudding.) (40 stitches)
Embellishment
First embroider 3 holly leaf outlines on top of sauce using long running stitches and green yarn. Then embroider berries using daisy stitch and red yarn according to the photograph.
Making up
Thread a length of 3 ply gold yarn through the top of the pudding.
Thread both ends of this up through the centre of the sauce from the bottom up.
Ease the sauce down over the top of the pudding and use the white yarn tail to sew the sauce to the pudding with running stitches.
